SEO for Schools
Independent schools and nurseries, where a single pupil is worth years of fees plus the parent researching you is asking an AI assistant before they ever reach your website. We build for both.
We pulled 10,003 UK independent education keywords for this page. On 45% of the demand we could measure, Google now publishes an answer above the results, plus 90% of it carries a People Also Ask block. A parent asking which schools are worth looking at is being given an answer before your website gets a chance to make one. Whether your school is inside that answer is now the whole game.
The parent asks. Something else answers.
Choosing a school is the most researched purchase a family makes. It runs for months, it involves both parents plus usually the grandparents, it starts with an open question rather than a school name.
That open question used to produce ten blue links, one of which was yours. It now produces an answer. In our dataset, 561 terms carrying 185,380 monthly searches already return an AI Overview at the top of the page. That is 45% of every search we could measure. On top of that, 1,298 terms carrying 370,270 searches return a People Also Ask block, which is 90% of the measured demand.
Then there is everything happening off Google entirely. Parents now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot plus Perplexity to shortlist schools for them, compare two schools, explain what fees actually cover or tell them which schools near a postcode take pupils with an EHCP. Those tools do not browse your prospectus. They read structured, factual, machine-readable content plus they cite what they can verify.
This is what AI optimisation means in practice. Not a buzzword, not a bolt-on. It is the work of making your school the thing those systems can read, trust plus quote when a parent asks a question you would love to be asked.
What loses
- A prospectus locked inside a PDF
- Fees available on request
- Facts buried in a headteacher's welcome letter
- Different details on your site, your listings plus the association directories
- News posts about a bake sale, nothing answering a parent's actual question
What gets quoted
- Direct questions answered directly, in text, on a page
- Fees, age ranges, class sizes plus entry points stated as facts
- Schema markup so machines read the structure rather than guessing
- The same details everywhere a machine can check
- Content that reads like an answer rather than a brochure
Why schools lose it
- The website was built by a designer, for a governor, to look impressive
- Marketing sits with one person who also runs the newsletter
- The prospectus is treated as the real document plus the site as a shop window
- Nobody has ever asked an AI assistant about their own school
Try it yourself before you ring anybody, including us. Ask ChatGPT to recommend independent schools in your area, then ask it what fees your school charges. What comes back tells you more about your visibility than any ranking report will.
What parents are actually searching
The number worth acting on: fee and funding searches average a difficulty of 24. The largest high-intent question in the sector is also one of the least contested, because almost no school answers it properly.
Fees on request is now costing you enquiries
53,120 monthly searches in this dataset are about fees, funding, bursaries, scholarships plus affordability. Average difficulty 24, which is low. It is the largest genuinely addressable question in independent education plus the one schools are most reluctant to answer on a page.
Inside that group, 117 terms carrying 21,630 monthly searches are specifically about VAT on private school fees, which has applied since January 2025. Alongside them sit searches about affordability, about paying fees in instalments plus about grandparents contributing. Whatever anybody thinks of the policy, the search behaviour is a fact: parents are working out whether they can still do this.
A school that answers those questions clearly, with real numbers plus a genuine explanation of bursary provision, is answering the thing standing between an interested parent plus an open day booking. A school that says fees on request has handed that conversation to a forum, a comparison site or an AI assistant working from whatever it can find.
This is also where the two disciplines meet. A fees page written as a clear answer is exactly what an AI assistant will quote when a parent asks what your school costs. Covered in school fees and funding pages.
Where parents are searching
Something worth noticing before you read the table. Independent education searches by county rather than by town, because families travel for a school in a way they never would for a dentist. Surrey, Kent, Hertfordshire plus Berkshire all outrank most individual cities.
London carries 35,710 monthly searches on its own, roughly five times the next entry, so it sits outside the table below to keep the rest readable. Bars are scaled against Essex at the top.
Rounded monthly UK volumes for independent education terms carrying each place name. Two individual schools' brand and curriculum searches were stripped out first, because a raw export makes them look like regional demand when they are one school's own traffic. Want your own county pulled properly? We will do it free.
A page for every question a parent asks
Parents do not search for a school in the abstract. They search a stage, a need or a worry: sixth form entry, boarding for an overseas pupil, a nursery place from September, provision for a child with an EHCP, what the fees really come to.
Here is the verified demand behind each one. Note that three of these carry almost no search volume at all plus we have said so on the card rather than dressing them up. They earn their place by converting a parent who is already looking, plus by being the page an AI assistant quotes.
Difficulty is the average across every term in that group. Volumes are rounded monthly UK totals after filtering out overseas terms, state sector searches, staff recruitment plus two schools' own brand traffic. Full breakdown in the complete guide.
What is included
You do not need to buy SEO, a website person, an AI consultant plus a social person separately. It is all one job to us, on one monthly fee. Tap through to see what each part does for a school.
AI optimisation, first rather than last
Every fact about your school stated as a fact on a page a machine can read: fees, age ranges, entry points, class sizes, inspection outcome, accreditations, destinations. Schema markup throughout. Questions answered as questions. The same details wherever a machine can check them, because inconsistency is what makes an assistant hedge or leave you out. For a school this is not an add-on. It is the front door.
Local SEO and Maps
Independent education searches by county rather than by street, so we build for the area families genuinely travel from. Your Google Business Profile worked properly, your listings consistent plus your school findable from every direction a parent might approach it.
Admissions and school-type pages
A real page for each entry point you offer: nursery, prep, senior, sixth form, boarding, international, specialist provision. These are your service pages plus they are what actually rank.
Fees, funding and bursaries
53,120 monthly searches at a difficulty of 24. Real numbers, what they include, how bursaries and scholarships work plus how payment is structured. The single biggest unanswered question in the sector.
Open days and conversion
The biggest conversion event in admissions. Dates findable, booking obvious, the visit explained plus the follow up structured. Low search volume, enormous commercial value.
Website management
Your site looked after rather than left alone between prospectus cycles. New pages built as terms change, fees kept current plus the prospectus content brought out of the PDF and onto pages that can be found.
Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
Two posts a week on each. Parents check social before they book a visit, so it works as proof rather than as broadcast.
Four steps, then we keep going
We ask the machines about you first
Before anything is written we run your school through the assistants parents are using plus record what comes back. It is usually uncomfortable reading. It is also the clearest brief we could ask for.
We make your facts machine-readable
Fees, entry points, age ranges, inspection outcome, accreditations plus destinations stated plainly, marked up properly plus made consistent everywhere they appear.
We build the admissions pages
A page per entry point, the fees and funding content, the open day route plus the proof a considered decision needs. Written to be quoted rather than admired.
We keep at it through the admissions cycle
An update every three weeks and a full audit every quarter, timed around your open days plus your registration deadlines rather than around our invoice dates.
What would it take to cover the fee
Drag the sliders to your own numbers. A pupil is not a one-off sale, so use the annual fee income rather than a single term. This is a rough illustration to think with, not a promise of results.
Illustration only, based on one year of fees per pupil. Most pupils stay for several. Real results depend on your area, your competition and your school. We do not guarantee positions, enquiries or admissions.
