How a site is organised is usually treated as a navigation question decided by a designer. It also determines what the site is understood to be about. This page describes the structure of the site you are currently reading, so you can check the claim rather than take it.
How A Site Is Organised Is A Search Decision
Structure gets decided during a design phase, by somebody thinking about how a visitor moves around. That is a reasonable way to approach it and it misses that the same decision determines what each part of the site is legible as being about.
Why it is treated as design. It looks like one.
Grouping pages, naming sections and deciding what goes where is visibly a layout exercise. Nothing about it announces that it is also deciding what subjects your site will be understood to cover.
What it actually decides. Two things at once.
What a visitor can find, plus what a section demonstrates collectively. The second is invisible during design and it is the half that determines search performance.
Why the timing is unfortunate. Earliest decision, latest consequence.
Structure is settled before most content exists. Its effect only becomes visible once enough has been published to reveal whether the grouping was right. By then it is expensive to revisit.

How grouping works, why it works, then the two things businesses commonly do about it that cost money without improving anything.
What Silo Architecture Describes
Grouping related content into self-contained sections that link tightly within themselves and deliberately between sections. That is the whole of it. The term carries considerably more mystique than the idea deserves.
What tightly within means. Pages in a section refer to each other.
A page in a section links to the other pages in that section where doing so genuinely helps the reader. Not a block of links at the bottom. References made because the other page is relevant to the sentence.
What deliberately between means. Cross links are chosen.
Sections do link to each other. Each of those links exists for a reason somebody could state. The old and stricter version of this idea forbade cross linking entirely, which produced sites that were tidy and useless.
What it is not. A folder structure.
The addresses may reflect it and the addresses are not it. That distinction has its own block below because it is where most businesses go wrong.
Why the term persists. It names something real.
Despite the mystique, the underlying observation holds: a site organised into coherent sections performs differently from the same content scattered. The next block is why.
Why Grouping Works
A section covering one subject thoroughly is legible as being about that subject in a way scattered pages are not. That is the mechanism. It is the same argument this cluster makes elsewhere from a different direction.
Why scattered pages read differently. Nothing accumulates.
Twelve pages on a subject spread across a site are twelve pages. The same twelve grouped and linked are a body of work on that subject, which is a different thing to assess even though the content is identical.
The connection to how relevance is decided. Aboutness at section level.
Relevance is assessed on what something is about rather than which phrases appear, as set out in what is semantic SEO. Structure is how that judgement becomes available above the level of a single page.
The second benefit. Reachability.
Grouped, well linked content is easier to reach, which matters enormously at scale and is the subject of what is crawl optimisation at scale.
The third, which nobody counts. It disciplines publishing.
A defined structure makes it obvious when something does not belong anywhere. That question, asked before publishing, prevents a great deal of the accumulation that later needs pruning.
This Site Is Built That Way
Every guide section on this site is organised the same way. You can verify that from the address of the page you are reading rather than believing the description.
What the pattern is. Hub, anchor, supporting pages.
Each section has a hub establishing what it covers, an anchor page carrying the central subject, plus supporting pages addressing the questions around it. The section you are in now is one of those.
How to see it. Look at the address bar.
The address of this page names its section, then the specific subject within it. Removing the last part gives you the section entry point. That is the structure made visible. It works the same way across every section here.
What the internal links are doing. Not decoration.
The links in this page's prose go to other pages in this section where they are genuinely relevant, then out to other sections where a subject properly belongs elsewhere. Each was a decision rather than an automatic insertion.
Why we are showing you. A description is worth less than a demonstration.
Anybody can describe an approach. Structure is one of the few things a reader can inspect directly, so it seemed reasonable to hand you the check rather than the claim.
What this does not prove. That the structure is correct.
It shows the approach was applied consistently. Whether the grouping is right for a given business is a judgement about that business rather than something visible from outside.
Depth Against Flatness
Deep structures organise well and bury things. Flat structures reach everything and explain nothing. This is a genuine trade-off rather than a matter of preference. It has a resolution.
What depth buys. Meaning.
Nesting expresses relationships. A page several levels down inherits context from everything above it. That context is information about what the page concerns.
What depth costs. Distance.
Every level is another step from the front of the site. Pages buried several levels down receive less attention and are harder to reach, however sensibly they are filed.
What flatness buys and costs. The mirror image.
Everything is close to the front and nothing expresses any relationship. A thousand pages all one step from the homepage tells a reader and a machine nothing about how any of them relate.
The resolution. Shallow hierarchy, strong linking.
A small number of levels, expressing genuine relationships, with substantial internal linking doing the connecting work that additional depth would otherwise have to. That gives you meaning without distance.
Why this is the practical answer. Linking is cheap and reversible.
Adding links costs nothing and can be changed at any time. Adding levels is structural and changing it later is a migration, which is block eight.
The Address Is Not The Structure
A folder path is a signal. Links are what actually connect a site. A well organised address structure with no internal linking behind it achieves very little. This is the commonest expensive misunderstanding in the subject.
What businesses do. Reorganise the addresses.
Reading about silo architecture, a business restructures its addresses into a tidy hierarchy. That is a migration carrying every migration risk. By itself it changes almost nothing about how the site is connected.
Why the path alone does so little. It is one signal among many.
An address hierarchy suggests a relationship. Links establish one. A page sitting in a folder with nothing linking to it from within that section is filed correctly and connected to nothing.
What to do instead, in most cases. Link first.
Improving internal linking within existing sections delivers most of the benefit, costs a fraction as much and carries none of the migration risk. It is also reversible if you get it wrong.
When the addresses genuinely do matter. Two cases.
Where the existing structure actively misleads, grouping unrelated things together. And where a site is being rebuilt anyway, in which case getting it right costs nothing extra.
The order to think in. Links, then paths.
Fix the connections first and see what remains a problem. Frequently nothing does, so you have avoided a migration you were about to pay for.
Navigation Is Not The Only Structure
What sits in a menu and what a site is organised around are different things. Menus should serve people. The structural work happens in the links inside the content.
Why menus cannot carry it. They have a hard limit.
A menu can hold a small number of items before it stops helping anybody. A site with fifty meaningful sections cannot express that in navigation without becoming unusable, so the menu is necessarily a summary rather than the structure.
What menus are actually for. The common journeys.
Getting a visitor to the few places most visitors want. That is a usability judgement made on visitor behaviour rather than on how the content is organised.
Where the structure lives instead. Contextual links.
References within the body of pages, made where they help the reader. There is no limit on those, they carry the meaning of their surrounding sentence, then collectively they are what connects a site.
Why this resolves a common argument. Both sides can win.
The designer wanting a short clean menu and the person wanting every section reachable are not actually in conflict. The menu serves visitors while the contextual links do the structural work. Neither has to compromise.
The practical test. Remove the menu mentally.
If the site would fall apart with the menu gone, all the structural work is in the navigation and none is in the content. That is worth knowing.
When To Restructure
Restructuring is a migration and it carries migration risk. It should not be done for tidiness. Tidiness is the reason it is usually proposed.
What restructuring actually is. Every address changes.
Moving pages means redirecting them, updating everything that pointed at them and accepting a period of instability. Our site migrations material covers what that involves and it is a project rather than a task.
Why tidiness is not a reason. Nobody is scoring you on neatness.
An untidy structure that works is preferable to a tidy one that cost you three months and a period of reduced performance. The discomfort of looking at a messy hierarchy is not a business case.
What is a reason. Three things.
The structure actively misleading about what sections contain. Content genuinely unreachable because of where it sits. Or a rebuild happening anyway, where the marginal cost of getting it right is close to nothing.
What to do if none of those applies. Improve the linking.
Almost everything a restructure would achieve is available through better internal linking, at a fraction of the cost and risk, per block six.
The sequencing rule if you do proceed. One thing at a time.

Fix the links
before you
move anything.
