How to Rank for Electrician Searches in Multiple Service Areas
You cannot appear in the map results for a town you are not in. The answer is not a page for every village. It is a smaller number of genuinely earned town pages, plus the prominence that works where proximity does not.
The Problem
You cover twenty miles in every direction. You appear in one town. Work comes from the streets around your unit while three towns you would happily drive to produce nothing at all.
Almost every trade we speak to describes some version of that. Almost every one assumes the website is at fault. It usually is not.
The reason is structural rather than technical. Local map results are calculated partly from how far you are from the person searching. Your business address is a fixed point. No amount of work on a website moves a van's registered address closer to somebody standing eight miles away.
Worth understanding before spending anything, since the two commonest responses both make it worse. A page for every village produces thin content performing worse than the four pages it replaced. Thirty towns in the footer achieves nothing.
What does work is narrower and slower. A small number of town pages that genuinely earn their place, plus a deliberate effort on the factors that are not distance based, which is where the real movement comes from.
The demand is worth having. In our own pull of 10,003 UK electrician keywords in July 2026, 1,255 terms carried a place name and 180,860 searches a month between them. That is a substantial part of the trade, spread across towns rather than concentrated in one.
Why The Map Results Will Not Follow You
Distance is measured from the person searching. Not from the centre of the town they typed. Not from where your van is parked. From the handset.
Which produces what is usually called the grid effect. Your visibility is not a single position. It is a field that varies continuously across your area, strongest around your address and weakening outward, at a rate depending on how many competitors sit between you and the person searching.
So you might be first for the same search in one postcode, fourth two miles out and absent at six, all at once. All three are true. None is your ranking.
Which is why checking from your own van tells you almost nothing. This is worth saying bluntly, because nearly every trade does it and draws the wrong conclusion.
Standing at your own address is the single most favourable point on the entire map. You are, by definition, the closest electrician to yourself. A search made there tells you what one person in one spot sees. That spot is the one place where your visibility is guaranteed to be at its best.
An electrician checking from the yard and seeing themselves top concludes the work is done. One seeing themselves fourth concludes it has failed. Both measured the same meaningless point.
Useful measurement takes readings from many points across the area you cover, which is block eight.
What The Service Area Setting Does
Nearly every trade holds the same belief about this setting, so it is worth correcting plainly rather than gently.
What it does. It tells Google which areas you are willing to travel to. It affects how your business is presented. For a business without a shopfront it allows the address to be hidden while coverage is still stated.
What it does not do. It does not place you in the map results for those towns.
Listing forty towns in your service area does not make you appear when somebody in the fortieth one searches. The distance calculation still runs from where they are standing to where your business actually is. A declared willingness to travel does not shorten it.
Why it persists. The setting looks exactly like the control that would do this. It is called a service area, you type town names into it, so the inference is obvious. It is reasonable and it is wrong.
The consequence matters. A trade believing this setting is doing the work stops looking for the thing that would, which is earned town pages plus the prominence work in block seven.
Set it accurately, because it should reflect where you genuinely work. Then treat it as a statement of fact rather than as a lever.
What A Town Page Has To Contain To Be Worth Having
A town page earns its place by containing evidence that you work there. Everything below is a form of evidence. A page with none of it is a page with a town name on it.
Named jobs in that town. What the property was, what the work involved, roughly when. Not a case study in the marketing sense. A short account of a real job a local reader recognises as local.
Photographs taken there. Your own work, not anything generic. The street furniture and housing stock in a photograph establish local presence better than any sentence about serving the area.
References a local reader would notice. Districts, landmarks, the names people use for parts of the town. A page written by somebody who has never been there reads as one.
The services that town wants. A Victorian terrace generates different work from a new estate. If the housing stock means rewires and board work, the page should be about that rather than a general list.
Answers to the questions that town asks. Parking, access, travel charges, how quickly you reach it in traffic.
The standard to hold yourself to is simple enough. Could this page have been written about anywhere else by changing one word? If it could, it is not a town page. It is a template with a variable in it. Block five explains what that costs.
How Many Towns Is Too Many
Twenty near identical town pages perform worse than four genuine ones. That is not a stylistic preference. Thin pages do active harm rather than sitting there neutrally.
What they cost you.
They compete with each other, since twenty pages about the same service in twenty places are largely the same page. They dilute whatever authority the site has across twenty destinations instead of four. And in quantity they change how the whole site is judged, which trades do not expect. A site that is mostly thin pages is assessed as a mostly thin site, including the good pages.
Which side of the line is a page on? Two quick tests.
The substitution test. Swap the town name for a different one. If the page still makes complete sense, it contains nothing about that town and it is thin.
The local reader test. Would somebody who lives there recognise it as written about their town? Not merely as mentioning their town. Recognise it.
A page failing both is not worth publishing. If it is already published it is worth removing or merging rather than leaving in place. Deleting weak pages is one of the few pieces of work in this field that produces movement quickly. Almost nobody is willing to do it.
Choosing Which Towns
Four things decide it. Taking any one alone produces the wrong list.
Demand. How much searching actually happens there, which is measurable rather than assumed.
Drive time. Not distance. Twelve miles of open road and twelve miles through a city at four in the afternoon are different jobs.
Competition. How many established electricians already hold that ground.
Margin. What the work there is worth once travel is accounted for.
Why the biggest town is frequently the wrong first target, which is the point of this block and one the data makes unusually clearly.
In our July 2026 pull, London carried 27,300 monthly searches for electrician terms at an average difficulty of 21, the hardest of any major city in the set, while Bristol carried 7,910 at 24, Sheffield 4,380 at 11 and Southampton 2,930 at 11.
So Bristol offers roughly twice Sheffield's volume at more than twice the difficulty. For one van and a finite budget the smaller town is not the compromise. It is where effort converts into visibility rather than into a slow fourth place behind three established firms.
Start where you can win, establish it, then move outward from a position of strength rather than beginning with the fight everybody else has picked.
What Else Moves Visibility Outward
Proximity is fixed. Relevance is largely settled once your profile and pages are right. Prominence is the one that keeps moving. It is why two electricians the same distance from a searcher do not get the same result.
Reviews, in volume and recency. The most direct prominence signal available to a trade, also the one most within your control. A business with a steady flow of recent reviews outranks a business with a better average that stopped collecting two years ago.
Citations and consistency. Your name, address and telephone number identical everywhere they appear. Old addresses and dead numbers scattered across directories are one of the quietest reasons a business cannot extend its reach.
Genuine local presence. Mentions from things that are themselves local. A sponsorship, a supplier listing, a news mention, a trade association entry carrying your area.
Why this is where the outward movement comes from. Distance works against you at the edge of your area by definition. Prominence does not weaken with distance in the same way, so a business that is genuinely more prominent than its neighbours holds visibility further out than proximity alone would give it.
That is the whole mechanism by which a trade extends its reach. It is slower and less satisfying than publishing pages. It is also the part that works. The mechanics of each lever are covered in our local SEO guides.
How We Approach It
The town order is decided before anything is built. Demand, drive time, competition and margin from block six, applied to your actual catchment rather than to a list of places you mentioned.
What gets built when. The home town first, properly, since a business that is not established where it sits will not establish itself anywhere else. Then outward in the order block six produces, one at a time, each page finished before the next begins.
That pace frustrates people who expected twelve pages in month one. It exists because four genuine pages beat twenty thin ones, plus each page needs evidence from real jobs that has to accumulate.
What runs alongside. The prominence work from block seven, continuously rather than as a phase, since it is what extends reach.
How coverage is measured. Across a grid of points spread over your service area rather than from a single location. That produces a picture of where you are visible and where you are not, which is the only version of this measurement that means anything.
It also makes progress visible in a way a single ranking number cannot, since visibility extends outward gradually rather than switching on. The grid shows movement months before any single position changes.
Common Mistakes
A page per village. The commonest and the most expensive. Somewhere between a town and a hamlet the demand stops justifying a page. Past that point every addition is dilution. If nobody searches for an electrician in a place of four hundred people, a page about it cannot help you.
The same content with the town name swapped. Covered in block five. It fails the substitution test by construction, since it was built by substitution.
Thirty towns listed in the footer. This does nothing. It has done nothing for a long time. It persists because it is easy and looks like coverage. The only thing it reliably achieves is making the footer longer.
Claiming coverage you cannot service. The one with a real cost. An enquiry from a town you will not drive to gets turned down, wasting their time and yours. Do it often enough and it produces the review saying the business does not cover the area it advertises.
The pattern underneath all four is the same. Each is an attempt to declare coverage rather than earn it. The map results respond to evidence rather than statements.
