What Is Google My Business?
You will still see "Google My Business" everywhere, but the tool has a new name. Here is what Google My Business was, why it is now Google Business Profile, what it does, and what the rename means for you.
Google My Business was the free tool for managing how a business appears on Google Search and Maps, now called Google Business Profile. Google renamed it in 2021 and 2022, moving management into Search and Maps. It is still free. It lets you manage your name, category, hours, photos, posts and reviews. Because of the rename you need to do nothing; existing listings carried over automatically.
What it was, and why the name changed
Google My Business was the free tool that let businesses manage how they appear on Google Search and Maps, and it is now called Google Business Profile. The tool remains, the name changed; because it controls your listing details, reviews and photos, it is still the central place you manage your presence on Google. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in 2021 and 2022, shifting management directly into Google Search and Maps rather than a separate app. It is a rebrand and a simplification; because the underlying listing is the same, existing profiles carried over and only the name and some workflows changed, which we cover in full on Google My Business vs Google Business Profile.

Cost is not a barrier; because it is free, every eligible local business can benefit from claiming and completing its profile. It lets you manage your business name, category, hours, contact details, photos, posts, reviews and more, controlling how your business shows up in local search. It is your local shopfront on Google; because it shapes what customers see, keeping it accurate and complete directly supports local visibility.
