How Solar Companies Rank for Battery Storage Searches
Two entirely different customers share this search. Somebody adding storage to an existing solar installation. Somebody buying a battery on its own to shift when they draw power. Most firms address only the first. The second turns out to be harder to find than it looks.
Two Different Buyers
One already has panels and wants to keep more of what they generate. The other has no panels at all and wants to buy power when it is cheaper and use it when it is not. They arrive at the same page with almost nothing in common.
What the first one is solving. Waste.
Somebody with panels sees generation happening while the house is empty. Storage is the obvious answer. The conversation is brief because they understand it already.
What the second one is solving. Timing.
A household on a tariff charging differently at different times can buy when it is cheaper, drawing from storage later. Nothing is generated, so no roof is involved and suitability never arises.
Why the second matters commercially. It removes the gate.
Every constraint on the installation page is a roof constraint. A customer whose roof rules them out of solar is not ruled out of this, which is a market a firm can serve with no suitable roof in sight.
Why most firms address only the first. It is the adjacent sale.
A solar company thinks in solar terms and writes for people who already want panels. The second buyer is not in that frame.
A Battery Without Solar Is A Real Market
The principle is sound and the customer exists. Our own research found they do not search for it in the words anybody would predict, which changes how a firm reaches them.
What the numbers show. August 2026.
The battery seam carries 64,750 searches a month across 376 terms. Of those, 334 terms and 55,420 searches a month attach explicitly to solar panels, being 86% of the seam by volume. Standalone language accounts for one term at 110 a month.
What that does not mean. That the market is imaginary.
It means the vocabulary has not caught up with the proposition. Somebody who wants to shift when they buy power does not think of themselves as a battery-without-solar customer, because that is a category the industry invented.
Where they actually appear. Tariff first.
Seven terms carrying 1,270 searches a month are tariff led. Almost all of them name a particular energy supplier rather than describing the concept. This buyer arrives through the tariff, not through the technology.
What follows for a firm. Write about the tariff behaviour.
Content about using power at different times reaches somebody who would never type the word standalone. Never name a supplier, nor state a saving, because the tariff landscape moves and the arithmetic is not yours.
The Existing Owner Is The Easiest Sale
Somebody who already has panels has a relationship with an installer and a system that can be extended. Most firms never contact their past customers about it.
Why the sale is short. Everything is already established.
They understand the technology and somebody has already been on their roof. None of the trust work described on the trust page has to be done again.
Why firms miss it. The customer is finished.
An installation is treated as a completed job, so the customer leaves the pipeline when the scaffolding comes down. A firm with years of work behind it has warm prospects and no habit of using them.
What to do about it. Two things.
Contact past customers directly. Write a page for somebody who already has panels rather than only for somebody who does not. Those readers search differently and land on nothing written for them.
Where this joins the maintenance argument. Same list.
That same base is the audience for servicing and monitoring, so one outreach exercise serves two revenue lines.
Sizing Is The Question And It Is Individual
The right capacity depends on how much a household uses, when they use it, what is generated and what tariff they are on. A survey establishes it. A web page cannot.
Why oversizing is the common error. More sounds better.
Capacity a household never fills is capacity they paid for and do not use. It is the mistake somebody makes buying on instinct rather than on their own consumption.
Why undersizing is less common. It is recoverable.
A system that fills every day is at least being used, so the position can sometimes be revisited. Money spent on capacity that never gets used cannot be.
What a page may say. The factors, never a number.
What sizing depends on, that it is established at survey and that the firm will not quote a capacity before understanding consumption. Never state a size or capacity for a reader.
Why saying so converts. It is the opposite of a sales pitch.
A firm declining to size a system on a web page, then explaining why, demonstrates exactly the restraint this sector's buyer wants.
Never Promise Independence From The Grid
Customers arrive wanting to be off grid. Domestic storage does not usually deliver that. A firm saying so plainly avoids a complaint that would otherwise arrive in month two.
Why the expectation forms. It is intuitive.
Generation plus storage sounds like self sufficiency. The arithmetic of a real household across a real year is different. Nobody buying has done it.
What must never be claimed. Any version of it.
Independence, self sufficiency, going off grid or freedom from a supplier. All are performance claims about a household the firm has not assessed. None may be made.
What may be said instead. The direction, not the destination.
That storage lets a household use more of what it generates or buys cheaply, then that how much depends on their consumption and their system. That is accurate and it commits the firm to nothing.
Why candour here pays. The alternative is a complaint.
A customer who expected independence and still has a bill has been misled, whatever the small print said. That is the pattern this sector's reputation was built on, per trust signals for solar installers.
Backup Power Is Not Automatic
A great many customers assume that having a battery means the house keeps running in a power cut. That is not necessarily so. It has to be explained rather than discovered.
Why the assumption is universal. It is what a battery means everywhere else.
Every other battery a person owns works when the power is off, so nobody expects a system with a battery in it to behave differently and nobody thinks to ask.
What the position generally is. Configuration dependent.
Supplying a house during an outage requires the system to be specifically arranged for it. Where it has not been, the installation may shut down along with everything else.
When the customer finds out. During the first power cut.
The worst possible moment. It is also when a firm that never mentioned it becomes the firm that misled them. A complaint that writes itself.
What to publish. The question, asked for them.
That customers frequently assume this, that it depends on configuration and that they should ask before buying. Never promise backup supply, nor describe what any particular system does without verifying it.
Tariffs Change And So Does The Case
The commercial argument for storage rests substantially on a tariff the customer does not control and can change at any time. A firm acknowledging that is more credible than one presenting fixed arithmetic.
What the dependency actually is. Somebody else's pricing.
The case is strongest where the gap between cheaper and dearer periods is wide. That gap is set by a supplier, it moves, plus the customer may switch next year anyway.
Why most firms leave it out. It weakens the number.
A clean calculation looks more persuasive than one resting on something changeable. It is also the version that produces a disappointed customer.
Why conceding it works. The reader already suspects.
Anybody who has switched supplier knows pricing moves. A firm saying so out loud confirms what the reader already believes, which buys credit for the rest of the page.
What follows for the content. No fixed arithmetic anywhere.
Describe what the case depends on rather than what the case is, then route the reader to an assessment rather than a figure, per solar ROI and savings calculators.
Warranties And Cycles
Battery warranties are typically not expressed as a simple number of years. Customers assume they are, so most people buying do not understand what they bought.
How they are usually framed. By use as well as time.
Cover is frequently expressed by how much the battery has been cycled or passed through it, sometimes alongside a period. The household's own behaviour determines most of that.
Why that matters to a buyer. Heavy use shortens it.
A household using the battery hard is consuming the warranty faster than one using it lightly, which is counterintuitive to anybody who thinks of a warranty as a date.
What a firm should do. Explain the shape, verify the terms.
Explain that battery cover is expressed differently and that a customer should understand which measure applies. Never state a term, cycle count or retained capacity figure without verifying it against the manufacturer's current documentation.
Why this belongs on the page. It prevents the year six argument.
Same logic as the three separate warranties on the trust page. A customer who understood at the sale is not surprised later.
Retrofit Is Not Always Simple
Adding storage to an existing installation is straightforward in some cases and less so in others. A firm saying this before quoting avoids a difficult conversation afterwards.
What can complicate it. The existing system.
An older installation may need extra equipment for storage to work with it. That is about what is already there rather than a reflection on whoever installed it.
Why it matters to the customer. It moves the cost.
Two households with identical batteries can face different totals because of what is already on the wall, so a customer comparing quotations may be comparing different amounts of work.
Why publishing it helps. It explains a difference.
A firm quoting higher because it priced the necessary alteration looks expensive until somebody explains why. The page can do that before the quotation lands.
What establishes it. A survey, again.

What The Page Has To Contain
Six things. The second is what most competitors leave out entirely.
What the firm installs. Plainly.
Including whether they retrofit systems they did not install, which people ask.

With the tariff led route written in tariff language rather than in industry language.
What a survey establishes. Per blocks four and nine.
Sizing and retrofit complexity, neither of which is answerable in advance.
The backup power position. Per block six.
Stated before somebody has to ask, because the alternative is a power cut.
