How Solar Companies Rank for Panel Installation Searches

The customer's first question is whether it is worth it for them. The answer depends on their roof, their consumption and their tariff. A page that pretends to answer it is giving a wrong answer to most of the people reading. A page that explains what the answer depends on, then offers to find out, converts.

They Want An Answer You Cannot Give

Every visitor arrives with the same question, which is whether solar is worth it for them. It is entirely reasonable, it is the only question they care about and no web page can answer it.

Why the answer is individual. The inputs are personal.

The outcome depends on a specific roof, a specific household's electricity use and a specific tariff. Change any of those and the answer changes, which means there is no general answer to give.

What most competitors do about it. Answer anyway.

A headline figure appears, calculated on assumptions the reader never sees. It is right for whoever those assumptions describe and wrong for everybody else, which is most people.

Why that is worse than saying nothing. It sets an expectation.

A customer who read a figure and got something different has a grievance rather than a disappointment. This is a sector where grievances have a long history.

What the page should do instead. Explain and offer.

Set out what the answer depends on, which is block two, then offer the thing that produces a real answer, which is block five. That sequence is the whole page.

The block that earns the page

What It Actually Depends On

Seven factors, described as things a survey establishes rather than as inputs to a sum. The last two surprise people, because they assume this is a question about sunshine.

The roof itself. Four of the seven.

Which way it faces, how steeply it pitches, what shades it during the day and what condition it is in. The last one is frequently the decisive one and almost nobody mentions it, because a roof needing attention should have that done first.

How much electricity the household uses. The fifth.

A household that uses very little has less to displace, whatever a system generates. That is obvious once stated and rarely stated.

When they use it. The sixth, being the important one.

Whether consumption happens while generation is happening. Block three is entirely about this because it matters more than anything else on the list.

What they pay for electricity. The seventh.

The tariff decides what displaced consumption is worth. The customer can change it. That makes the answer a moving one rather than a fixed property of the house.

The most useful correction on any page in this cluster

Usage Pattern Matters More Than Sunshine

A household at home during the day is in a materially different position from one that is out until evening. That single difference affects the outcome more than almost anything else. Almost no solar page corrects the assumption.

Why customers assume otherwise. The technology suggests it.

Everybody understands that panels need light, so everybody assumes the question is how sunny the roof is. It is a reasonable inference and it is the wrong end of the problem.

What actually matters. Overlap.

Generation happens during the day. If the household is using electricity then, generation displaces something bought. If the household is out, the position is different and depends on what happens to what is not used.

Why this is worth leading with. Nobody else does.

A page that explains this is telling a reader something they did not know, about their own situation, that changes how they think. That is a considerably stronger position than a page repeating what every competitor says.

The limit on how far to take it. No figure, ever.

Explain the principle and stop. Attaching a number to the difference turns a genuine insight into the kind of claim block four rules out.

The rule, on the page where it matters most

Never Publish A Payback Period As Fact

This is the page a firm most wants to put a number on, which is exactly why the rule belongs here rather than in a footnote somewhere.

Why a payback figure cannot be supported. It rests on unknowns.

It depends on consumption, on when that consumption happens, on a tariff the customer may change and on an export arrangement they choose separately. None of that is knowable from a web page, so a published figure is a claim about somebody the firm has never met.

What the customer does with it. Relies on it.

A number on a website becomes something a buyer relied on. That is precisely the mechanism behind this sector's complaint history, which makes it a commercial risk rather than only a compliance one.

The only defensible version. An illustration, fully shown.

What this rules out beyond the obvious. Three more.

A saving, a generation figure and an export income. All four are the same claim wearing different clothes. None appears on any page in this cluster as a statement of fact.

The commercial objective, restated

What A Survey Establishes

The page is not selling an installation. It is selling a survey, because a survey is the answer to every question in block two and an installation is the thing that might follow.

What a proper survey covers. Everything the page could not.

The roof itself, including its condition and access. Shading across the day and the year. The existing electrical arrangements. The household's actual consumption and when it happens. And what is realistically achievable on that specific property.

Why reframing the objective helps. It is an easier yes.

Asking somebody to commit to a large purchase is a big step. Asking them to have somebody look at the roof is a small one. It is also the step that produces the information both parties need.

What to publish about it. Whether it costs anything.

Say plainly whether a survey is charged, what happens at it, how long it takes and whether there is any obligation afterwards. That last point removes the fear this sector's history created.

What it must not become. A sales visit in disguise.

A survey described as free advice and delivered as a pitch confirms every suspicion the customer arrived with. If the visit ends in a quotation, say so on the page.

Roof Suitability Is The Gateway Question

Before anybody asks what it costs, they ask whether it would even work on their house. That question is the natural entry point to this page and it is the largest uncontested opportunity in the sector.

What our research found. August 2026.

Roof suitability terms carry 57,540 searches a month across 420 terms, at a median competitive difficulty of 17. The file median is 25. Cost terms sit at 33 across 815 terms and 191,410 searches a month.

What that means in practice. The entry is cheaper than the destination.

A firm competing head on for cost terms is fighting in the hardest part of the market. The question people ask first is markedly easier to reach them on. It also leads to the same place.

Why nobody serves it. It does not feel like selling.

A page about whether a roof is suitable reads like information rather than marketing, which is why installers skip it and why it works.

What it should do. Explain, then hand over.

Set out what makes a roof more or less suitable, without assessing anybody's, then route the reader to a survey. Never tell a reader their roof will or will not work.

Factual, general and devolved

Planning And Permissions

Most domestic roof mounted installations fall under permitted development, subject to conditions. The exceptions are where the useful content is. Two of them are rarely published.

The general position. Attributed, checked August 2026.

In England, most domestic roof mounted solar is permitted development under the 2015 order, subject to conditions on how far panels project from the roof plane and on not rising above the highest part of the roof. Planning is devolved, so Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each operate their own regime.

The exceptions everybody publishes. Two.

Listed buildings require listed building consent regardless of nation and regardless of where panels sit. Conservation areas generally retain permitted development, with the principal constraint being an elevation fronting a highway.

The exception almost nobody publishes. A local direction.

A local authority can withdraw permitted development rights for a specific area. A street can look like ordinary permitted development territory and have had those rights removed. Only the local authority can confirm it. Finding that out after installation is an expensive way to learn it.

And the second. Flats.

Permitted development rights do not apply to flats and maisonettes at all. Never state a measurement without verifying it first, nor tell a reader what their own property permits.

Rarely explained, easily reassuring

Grid Notification

An installation has to be notified to the network operator, perhaps approved by them in advance depending on size. Customers do not know this exists and are reassured to hear it is handled.

What may be said generally. That it happens and who does it.

That there is a notification or approval process involving the network operator, that it depends on the size of the installation and that the installer handles it as part of the job. That is the whole of what a marketing page needs.

What must not be described. The process or any threshold.

Never set out the steps, the timescales or the capacity at which the requirement changes, without attribution and verification. Those details vary and they change. A customer relying on a wrong one has been misled by the firm.

Why mentioning it converts. It signals competence.

A customer reading that there is a process with the network operator, then that the firm deals with it, understands that this is real infrastructure work rather than fitting something to a roof.

Where it sits alongside everything else. Separate.

Notification is separate from planning and separate from building regulations. They run alongside one another rather than substituting. A page that conflates them will confuse somebody.

Described, never quantified

Export Arrangements

Electricity a household generates and does not use goes somewhere. Arrangements exist under which a supplier pays for it. Explaining the shape of that is useful. Putting a number on it is not permitted.

Arrangements exist under which licensed suppliers pay for exported electricity. Eligibility requires the installation and installer to be certified through the recognised scheme or one accredited as equivalent. That is the certification point from trust signals for solar installers, applied.

The part customers do not realise. They choose.

Rates differ between suppliers and the customer selects theirs. It is not a fixed national figure attached to the installation, which means the installer is not in a position to state one.

What must never appear. A rate or an income.

Never state an export rate, imply an income or include either in a cost comparison. Doing so converts a price into a return claim, which is the specific breach the pricing page deals with.

What to publish instead. The mechanism and the choice.

That the arrangement exists, that certification is what makes a customer eligible and that they will choose a supplier. Three facts, none of them a number.

Straight in a way that pays off later

Panels, Inverters And Why The Inverter Matters

Customers compare panels. They rarely think about the inverter, which is typically the component that needs attention first.

Why attention goes to the panels. They are the visible part.

Panels are what somebody pictures, what appears in every photograph and what brands compete on. The inverter is a box that does the actual conversion and nobody mentions it during the sale.

Why the imbalance costs the customer. It shapes expectations.

A customer comparing quotes on panel brand alone may be comparing systems that differ in the component most likely to need replacing during their ownership.

What a firm gains by explaining it. A better conversation later.

Somebody who understood the inverter's role at the point of sale is not surprised by it in year eight. That is the same argument as the warranty position, which is on the trust page.

The limit on what may be claimed. Attribution.

Never make a product claim about performance, durability or comparative quality without attributing it to the manufacturer or a named published source with a date.
